When most people think of Subaru, they think of the automaker’s commitment to full-time four-wheel drive, but not the team put together by Parents magazine and Edmunds.com. For those folks, it’s the automaker’s family-friendly approach that sets Subaru apart from the competition.

The evidence: The Parents/Edmunds.com partnership, with the input of several “real” families, have named a Subaru to their annual list of “Best Family Cars” for the second consecutive year. The Subaru Forester was one of the 2009 honorees, while this year the Subaru Legacy got the call.

“The Legacy won us over with its safety features and family-friendly details, like a roomy back seat and a trunk that is perfect for stroller-toting moms and dads,” said Dana Points, editor-in-chief of Parents.

Those safety features include a four-wheel anti-lock braking system with electronic brake-force distribution, traction control, a comprehensive range of air bags, an energy-absorbing collapsible steering column, active front head restraints and the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) system to help better secure child safety seats.

Features like these have also made the Legacy a “Top Safety Pick” of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a recognition that is shared with the entire Subaru lineup. In fact, Subaru is the only automaker in America to have all of its models achieve “Top Safety Pick” status.

Of course, the Legacy’s standard all-wheel-drive system received kudos as well, as did the car’s responsive boxer engine, which allows the sedan to “take to the road like a sprightly coupe,” according to the list makers.

“We are pleased that the Subaru Legacy is being recognized by the experts at Parents magazine and Edmunds.com,” ┬ásaid Tom Doll, executive vice president and COO for Subaru of America, Inc. “We can’t think of a better endorsement by not only true automotive experts, but by parents who put our cars through the rigors of family life day after day.”
