Subaru Pours On The Speed At SEMA

Last month at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, the event again lived up to its name as one of the hottest exhibitions of aftermarket goodies in the world. And, Subaru no doubt helped turn up the heat thanks to the sizzling WRX STI.

Among the models in the spotlight:

  • The “Fastest STI Ever,” which this year lapped Germany’s grueling Nurburgring race course in just 7:55—quicker than the Cadillac CTS-V sedan.
  • The WRX STI that Travis Pastrana used to set a world record in January, when he and his high-flying Subaru jumped 269 feet through the air before landing safely.
  • Customized STI’s from Get More G’s, Kicker Audio and K&N Performance.
  • Jamarri Whiteside’s 2006 WRX STI, named Subiefest Best of Show in 2006.

Of course, the production WRX STI is no slouch either, especially for the 2011 model year. This time around, Subaru’s high-performance flagship is available in both five-door hatch and sedan configurations—the first time it’s been offered in two body styles—with the latter bringing back the iconic “big wing” at the rear. Overall, both cars benefit from a number of exterior enhancements, like sharpened bumper corners, wider black-out-style fog-lamp nacelles, a new lip spoiler, and bigger grille and bumper-intake openings. Both choices also showcase significantly revised suspension adjustments that take handling to a whole new level.

Among the upgrades: aluminum front lower L-arms that reduce unsprung weight, a lowered ride height, new bushings front and back, higher-rate springs, thicker front and rear stabilizer bars and an STI-specific Brembo Performance Brake System. This new stopper setup includes Super Sport ABS, which can control the braking forces at each rear wheel independently for optimal braking utility during hard cornering.

But with SEMA now over, remember that the best place to take a look at super Subarus like the WRX STI is your local Subaru dealership—and after that, your driveway.
